Connemara means “inlets of the sea” in Irish. Connemara’s coarse and captivating mosaic of tiny lakes and peat, where the first transatlantic flight landed. Looking west across the great sweep of Galway Bay, you can watch the sun go down behind the Aran Islands, before spending a night in the City of the Tribes itself. See details of our 5 Star Galway Clifden and Connemara tour for a very special day.

Our Route

Leaving the city of Galway we take the coast road towards the towns of Barna and Spiddal. Looking across Galway Bay to North Clare and the most noteworthy Burren region as we go. Spiddal is a small seaside village where the people speak both Irish and English.

Along the coast road, we can see the Aran Islands while we travel along the Wild Atlantic Way. Arriving at Clifden which is the capital of Connemara and a must stop on any tour. Clifden has a superb range of restaurants, cafés, pubs and shopping.

Next along is the Sky Road where it is said ‘you can see America’. The Sky road is said to be the most panoramic drive in Ireland including the mountains which are part of the famous Twelve Bens. A short distance from Letterfrack is the magnificent Kylemore Abbey, which is no longer a school. The nuns presently run the Abbey as a visitor attraction.

Travelling on the homeward journey we drive along by Killary Harbour which is the only Fjord in Ireland. Then through the town of Linnane at the end of the harbour and was the town that featured movie The Field.

Driving through the Maam Valley North Connemara is a breathtaking drive. The next stop on the tour is at the very pretty town of Cong, this medieval town has the ruins of the former Augustinian abbey which dates to the 13th century. However Cong is more famous for the 5 star Ashford Castle Hotel and was the town where the 1952 Hollywood blockbuster ‘The Quiet Man’ was filmed.

We now head back to your hotel in Galway with hopefully a better understanding of Galway Clifden and Connemara in this beautiful part of Ireland.
